Sustainable urban development

This assignment aims to further develop your knowledge and understanding of the key areas affecting sustainable urban development; the preparation of a client report advising on options for sustainable retrofit for an existing building at UTS.

This is an individual assignment and you are required to provide advice and guidance to your client, UTS.

UTS are considering a retrofit of their property however they are unsure about the type and extent of sustainability and resilience measures they should be integrating into the redevelopment. Their intention is to ‘develop and hold' the development upon completion. They are proposing to commence retrofit works in early 2018 and they are seeking your professional advice with regards to the optimum sustainability measures in this development. You are to take a cradle to grave approach to the whole life cycle of the proposed development and should consider works in the short, medium and long term.

You are to work within the planning and regulatory constraints affecting property development in the city. This assignment builds on the information discussed throughout the lecture series.

You are required to attend the site on Friday 28th April. We will examine a typical space, and we will also get a tour of the plant facilities.

During this visit you are required to collect data and information about the building. The client's representative will be on site to answer questions about the client and their intentions for the building. You can work in small teams of 5 to share information and to discuss the project and for the purposes of the class presentation on Saturday 29th April. The final reports MUST be individual submissions and must be your own work.

In-class, presentation and assessment of initial ideas and proposals for sustainable retrofit of the building. You will be assessed on your ability to develop a coherent, relevant articulation of innovative ideas in a short period of time.

Ability to communicate using verbal, written, and/or visual media

Understand the principles of economic, environmental, & social sustainability and be able to apply them to analysing best practices and developing recommendations for the client
