Question - At a conference of practicing managers and academics, a significant amount of time was spent discussing the importance of managing knowledge within organizations. The discussion focused on the potential for knowledge management to engender organizational outcomes such as innovation and performance. The discussants argued that facilitating knowledge management per se may not guarantee that organizations will achieve better outcomes. Rather, they feel that organizations need to develop processes to enable knowledge to be appropriately used. A number of the practicing managers shared their experience about how the talents of employees go unnoticed and wondered whether allowing them to participate in management decision could be a way by which an organization could utilize their knowledge. Some emphasized how allowing individuals some level of autonomy might be a better option. Others also expressed some worry that autonomy may decrease efficiency and goal directedness in employee behaviour. An academic among them focused more on how leadership may facilitate successful deployment of knowledge. For her, leadership is crucial in any organizational endeavour. The practicing managers and the academics ended the meeting feeling satisfied that they had a very useful discussion but they also felt that having some research evidence on some or all the issues discussed will help them understand those issues better.
