 Creating Valid, Reliable, and Realistic Measures:

During surgery, a friend of mine had layers of her skin cut open and stitched together. She was informed that the inner-layer stitches used on her skin are reversible. Unfortunately, the surgeon found she was not healing properly when she went back for a post-op. The inner layer's stitches were found to be impermeable, which is a problem. In order to debride the wound and give her broad-spectrum antibiotics, the surgeon had to reopen the incision. She had to take some time off of work as a result of the lengthier time it took for her wound to heal. Because the surgical staff didn't ensure that the proper suture was being used, I thought this was poor care.

1. Identify/develop three (3) performance measures that might assist the facility in measuring/evaluating the particular aspects of care or service that you found to be unsatisfactory.

• Each measure should first be written in the form of a measurement statement (e.g. "Percent of patients indicating satisfaction with their post-surgical care experience.").
• Next, construct the measure in the form of an actual formula, indicating the specific numerator and denominator that would capture each measurement.
• Third, indicate why you felt each of the measurements you included would be appropriate (valid) as a means towards measuring the quality of those healthcare services.
