Practicum
The primary focus of this 20-day practicum is to observe and work with children in the 2-3-year-old setting.
You will closely watch the Early Childhood Educators and continue to develop the skills and knowledge to care for the children. You will become actively involved in guiding children's behaviour and observing children's interest and learning, preparing lesson plans (for a small group, maximum 4-5 children) and carrying them out in line with their developmental needs.
In this second practicum you will choose ONE focus child, and closely observe their language, cognitive, fine-motor and gross-motor skills, social and emotional development, individually and as a member of a group, and consider the impact of socio-cultural contexts on the child's learning and development during the three-week block.
With the help of the Supervising Teacher, you will identify ONE child with behavioural issues. You need to focus on the social, emotional, and behavioural needs of the child. Using Behavioural Observation taught in lectures, prepare an Individual Behavioural Support Plan by end of week one. You will demonstrate implementations of strategies proposed and be evaluating the effective of the plan at the end of the placement.
In this practicum, you will submit a 3-minute (max) video based on the lesson plan based of your observed child, carried out in a small group setting of 4-5 children. Observations of your TWO focus children (one with behavioural issues) will include that of literacy, numeracy and arts development. You will need to demonstrate the child's learning in context of their peers in all your observations.
Like previous Professional Experience, you will be reflecting on the topics indicated based on observations and conversations with the supervising teacher and other educators underpinned by theories, best practice, or centre's philosophy.
The Reflective Journal (min. 200 words) is a record of the pre-service Early Childhood Teacher's journey to build professional knowledge in education and care for young children as they reflect on policy reading, observation, and conversations with the Supervising Teacher's practice to demonstrate understanding of how philosophy, ethics and practice will influence their practice.
Using the observation templates provided, you will demonstrate understanding of the following:
• You will demonstrate knowledge of different observation and assessment methods best suited to observe the respective developmental domains.
• Capture understanding of how children develop both in the observation and assessment of their learning.
• Links to maximum two EYLF outcomes
• Ability to extend child's interest or learning required, specifying the resource or experience you will provide
• You will present completed type written observations to the Supervising Teacher for feedback after each weekend.
