Instructions: For this paper you are to develop further the research you did for the summary essay and annotated bibliography. Your essay should makes a sound argument supported by quality sources, such as those found in peer-reviewed journals and in books published by academic presses. You are required to use at least 8 sources in your research essay, and may use more than that. It is encouraged that you use as many peer-reviewed or academic press sources as possible, but not all your sources have to be peer-reviewed/academic. It is recognized that some topics may not lend themselves to traditional academic style sources. You may also do primary research, and may count that as one or more of your sources. The argument you make in the essay will most likely be far more subtle than the traditional sorts of arguments made in essays about such divisive topics as gun-control, legalizing marijuana, and abortion-pay attention in class and to your sources to understand how to create and follow-through with one of these more subtle arguments.
Process Work: In addition to the essay itself, you will receive a grade for various process assignments that build to the final draft of the essay-some of these will be done online, and some in class. Completion of these process steps will earn quiz and activity points and will provide you with a valuable opportunity to receive feedback on your progress towards the final draft of the essay. These assignments and their due dates will be forthcoming once the Summary Essay is completed.
Evaluation: the final draft of the research paper will be graded in the following areas:
Thesis/Content: Is thesis statement specific? Is it thorough and expansive enough for the length of the paper? Does it fulfill the three roles of a thesis statement? Does the content throughout the paper support the thesis in very specific ways and is that content controlled by the thesis? Is the research integrated seamlessly into the essay?
Transition/Organization: Does the paper use significant and appropriate transition by both repetition and words? Are there sufficient transitions both between and within paragraphs?
Paragraphs: Are paragraphs of reasonable length? Do they have clear topic sentences? Do the paragraphs use recognizable modes of development?
Sentences/APA: Are the sentences both grammatically and stylistically sound? Are both in-text and reference page APA citations correctly done? Are quotations stylistically integrated in the essay and are the mechanics of those quotations correct?
