Discussion - Inclusive Physical Activity -Applying the TREE Framework
In this Module, you learned about the importance of keeping children (ALL children) active. Sometimes this can be a challenge depending on the abilities of the child. The TREE Framework gives you some factors to consider when designing and implementing physical activities for children with physical or cognitive exceptionalities.
For this discussion, you will redesign a simple, common physical activity or game that you will likely see played in an elementary (or even middle) school setting. Using the TREE Framework worksheet template (attached below), you will consider ways that you can make this activity more inclusive for two types of exceptionalities; a
1.) physical disability or impairment, and a
2.) cognitive or attention impairment (such as Autism, ADD, ODD, Down Syndrome).
Your choice, but please do not make it too easy on yourself :)
Steps:
1. Pick the activity and the physical disability or impairment, and a cognitive or attention impairment that you will use for the TREE activity
2. Develop the Inclusive Activity on the TREE Form
3. Respond to at least two classmates' ideas by providing feedback, identifying the aspects that you found helpful and/or adding suggestions on how the activity could be enhanced or adjusted for another student
Here are a few examples of the types of simple, common physical activities you could use:
- Musical Chairs
- Tag
- Bowling
- Badminton
- Simon Says
- Red Light/Green Light
- Dodgeball...you get the idea!
When posting your TREE Framework, please create a new discussion thread.
