Within the academic literature there is some considerable criticism of the profession's narrow view of competence, which seems to be viewed almost exclusively in terms of technical proficiency. The concern can be boiled down to a worry that while accountants might be able to engage with accounting at a practical level and while they might be skilled at developing technical solutions to accounting problems, they lack the capacity to critically engage with accounting at a civic and political level. In other words they lack the skills and knowledge base in order to develop the civic and democratic, as well as economic, potential of accounting.
