How can Barnett's three domains of critical practice (Source: Barnett, 1997, p. 105, cited in Glaister, 2008) help develop skills to becoming a critical social work practitioner?

Critical analysis involves the evaluation of knowledge, theories, policies and practice, including the recognition of multiple perspectives. It entails different levels of analysis and a stance of ongoing enquiry.

Critical reflexivity requires an engaged (aware and reflective) self. Through 'reflexivity' the practitioner recognises that engaging with service users and others is a process of responsive and continuous negotiated understanding and interventions. The practitioner is aware of and questions their personal assumptions and values within this process.

Critical action involves a sound skill base with awareness of context. It involves operating to challenge power inequalities resulting from structural disadvantage. It involves working with difference towards empowerment.
