Assume you are the Project Manager in charge of a New Year’s Eve party for your office. Your President has asked you to arrange a “memorable” event for all 150 employees at a new Downtown Hotel. He has given you a budget of $20,000. You must start immediately because New Year’s Eve is only a few weeks away!

1. Develop a Scope Statement for the project.

a. The details of the party are up to you…just clearly articulate them in the scope statement.

b. Include a concise, well written Project Objective.

c. Keep your deliverables, milestones, exclusions and technical requirements to a maximum of 6 each. It will make your project assignment much easier!

2. Using the Deliverables identified in your Scope Statement, create a Work Breakdown Structure and decompose to the Work Package level. Create your WBS in Word using SmartArt or in Excel – be sure it is in an hierarchy format. Refer to Chapter 4 for an example.

a. Explain how a Project Manager uses the WBS to establish the project baseline.

b. Why is the WBS considered one of the most important tools for a Project Manager?

3. Explain how the Project Network is developed from the WBS. How does the Project Manager use the Early Start, Early Finish, Late Start and Late Finish to communicate the project calendar to the Project Team?

a. What is a Critical Path?

b. What is the duration of the total project?

c. How is slack used in Project implementation?

4. Your Boss asks if you can have the party ready by 12/28, explain the process you would complete to crash the project to 28 days. What additional time and cost figures are needed to complete the crashing effort? What is the meaning of the Optimal Crash Point?

5. Ten days into the Project your Boss asks for a status update. Explain Earned Value and how you would use it to report back to your Boss. Why would you use Earned Value instead of just presenting Budgeted and Actual costs?
