TOPIC: TEACHING OUR CHILDREN TO BE GOOD PEOPLE-MORAL DEVELOPMENT AND PARENTING STYLES
• Research a student-selected topic that deepens or applies topics and themes covered in our course materials.
• Locate relevant resources that provide breadth and depth of information and perspective on your chosen topic.
• Read and review relevant research information
• Develop important research skills by way for composing an annotated bibliography (precursor to a research paper)
• Apply the biopsychological lens to to your topic and analysis
• Reflect on your learning and its significance
Part 1: Select Topic
• Select a lifespan psychology topic to explore of your own choosing! This should be something you are interested in personally or professionally and want to know more about.
• Topics can cover any facet of psychosocial development or developmental issues corresponding with any stage of the lifespan (birth through old age).
• Topic examples and how to choose your topic
Part 2: Research & Select Resources
• The goal of your research is to develop fluency in your chosen topic.
• Your research selections should seek to either deep dive into your topic generally (depth), or to address many angles of your topic choice (breadth).
• Select 6 resources that you will annotate. These should not be the first 6 sources you come across, but should be the resources that provide depth or breadth and a variety of perspectives, case examples, etc.
• Use a mix of credible resources: popular press, TEDtalks or similar credible documentary,video or podcast, academic articles, newpaper articles, credible web resources (e.g. academic or research institutions)
Part 3: Compose Annotated Bibliography
• INTRODUCTION: Write a brief introduction (2-3 sentences) noting your topic choice
• ANNOTATIONS: For each source please include the following:
1. Complete bibliographic citation (this is an interdisciplinary course, so I am not picky on citation styles. Please choose MLA, APA, or other familiar citation style and just stick to it)
2. Statement of central theme or main idea of source (a couple of sentences)
3. Summary of the content, message, or position/argument of the source. Provide an explanation of the main points. This is where you are demonstrating you have read and comprehend the source. (paragraph)
4. Discuss the relevancy of the information to your topic choice. How did this source inform your perspective on your topic? What does it add to your knowledge base and the depth of your understanding about the topic? (paragraph)
• FINAL ANALYSIS:
1. Pull together all you have learned from your research. Concisely, clearly and analytically discuss and summarize key findings, providing analysis and important connections. Cite your resources. (1-2 paragraphs)
2. How does the application of the biopsychosocial framework help to increase holistic understanding of your chosen topic? (paragraph)
• REFLECTION:
1. What made you choose this topic and what did you hope to accomplish and/or demonstrate? (few sentences-short paragraph)
2. In what ways does your project/topic choice and your research connect to your future career, personal life, or personal interest? (few sentences-short paragraph)
