Assignment

You have recently commenced your studies as a building professional. This hopefully will prepare you for a role in the construction industry. Within this role may afford you with the opportunity to work as an assistant project manager within boutique multi-unit/apartment development companies.

As such; you will be required to develop building services design documentation that aligns with the regulatory frameworks and the National Construction Codes(NCC). It is also understood and strongly believed that effective building services design, when used in in a sustainable manner with respect effective use of building materials, modern building design technologies impacts on the performance of a building.

In order for you to grasp these concepts; your first task is to develop and produce a comprehensive document that evaluates and appraises all the relevant information that applicable to building services.

Your report should include- but is not limited to the following considerations:
• Energy Efficiency (EE).
• Water Conservation (WC).
• Modern Sustainable Design influences.
• Trends (energy efficiency, greening buildings and cities, and ecological design).
• Consideration of the Regulatory parameters with the state of Victoria
• Classification of the buildings
• NCC with regards to Section J

Your documentation and submission should be addressed to the Senior Management and your investigation should be determined and address the following question:

How are the various sub-systems of building services integrated within the framework of a "Built System"?

Your report is required to consider and demonstrates the process and applications within the context of building services as to how materials, methods of installation, equipment, and compliance requirements integrate in a sustainable manner.

Through your investigation you should consider all aspects of sustainable building design parameters which forms a base that will assist you in complete your next task (Assignment-2) that has different classes buildings with different levels of complexity.

Assignment 2

Given that the building construction market place has many competitors -it is important for you to offer you clients diverse needs which will allow you to stay in business.

Senior Management would require of you to determine what are the current trends are in this space.

More importantly -what current leading edge practices you would consider and make recommendation for the use of energy efficiency and sustainable design within a multi-unit development project.

You are required to provide a sustainable development solution for Classes 2,6 7a project:
• Multi-unit Development that contains a minimum of 12 and up to a maximum of 18 units on the upper floors.
• Which incorporates - retail space on the ground floor underground carpark in the basement

The units should consider the following parameters:
• 1 - 2 bedrooms
• Bathroom arrangements (e.g. 1 bathroom + powder room or 2 bathrooms etc.).
• Lounge area
• Dining area
• Kitchen
• Laundry
• Single space covered parking facilities for each unit

Your solution should be based on your previous Assignment -1 investigation and research must demonstrate all the building services elements. The construction of the building form and type should demonstrate class parameters accordance with the relevant regulatory frameworks.

The investigation and findings will be presented to Senior Management is to be framed and presented in a report titled, ‘Sustainable Building Services and Design Case Study'.

This report must integrate and demonstrate a ‘Energy security and Water security solution'
that includes the following:
• A thorough understanding supported by relevant research that includes leading edge ESD framework in relation to sustainable building services are to be included in your development proposal.
• Your recommendations to should incorporate a thorough justification for the developments considerations.
• This should be supported by robust processes and design assessment methods that are determined by best practice recommendations.

Reflection and self-regulation
During this process (your learning journey) - you are also required to construct a reflection log that identifies your challenges. This reflection journal provides you with an opportunity to reflect on your reasoning and rational.

Through this process and the assistance of feedback your lecturer and input from your peers it will assist you in developing the proficiency and performance to think independently and critically.

At this level you must attain the appropriate knowledge, understanding and analysis you are expected to demonstrate the required cognitive skills, reasoning skills, and critical thinking skills. To this end you must show how all the relevant concepts interphase with the technologies, within the appropriate application context and to what extent this relationship is bound by the parameters of regulatory frameworks.
