Assessment Task 1
Task Description: From Week 1-5 Lectures & Tutorial workshops you have learned about the economic, environmental and socio-cultural impacts of tourism & hospitality. We have also explored strategies to manage these impacts to achieve sustainability.
For this assignment, you are required to
- Visit a tourist destination/ accommodation establishment/ theme park/ event/ leisure facility.
- Identify observable and potential economic, environmental and socio-cultural impacts.
- Present a report on these impacts including recommendations on how to improve sustainability.
Your report will include:
- an overview of the activities of the tourist destination/ accommodation establishment/ theme park/ event/ leisure facility
- a discussion of the current and potential positive and negative impacts occuring at the site
- a discussion of current measures to manage these impacts
- Recommendations for future management of both negative and positive impacts.
Assessment Task No 2. Responsible Tourism (Group Assignment-In pairs)
Task description: From Weeks 6 - 8 Lectures & Tutorial workshops you have learned about the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), Responsible Marketing and Sustainable Innovation, Marketing, Branding and Development. We have also explored strategies to manage these impacts in an attempt to achieve sustainability.
Assessment task 2 requires students to work in pairs (groups of 2) to:
1. Visit a tourist destination/ accommodation establishment/ theme park/ event/ leisure facility.
2. Analyse and discuss the extent to which the tourist site incorporates the recognised principles of responsible tourism.
3. Critique the tourist site against responsible tourism criteria by highlighting aspects where the principles are successfully addressed and making recommendations for areas requiring improvement.
Presentation format
The assessment task must be presented in a visual format such as video, digital poster or Web blog with Photos.
Students are encouraged to use their creativity presentation style. For example students may choose to present their content in a video documentary style presentation or Digital poster with photos and info-graphics or Web blog with photos.
Assessment Task No 3 Case Scenario (Individual)
Task description: A case study will be provided with questions that focus on the management of key global challenges and destination insights relevant to the tourism and hospitality sector. This includes how destination managers (council/city/Regional Tourism Organisations - RTOs) can manage operations, resources and brand image. Students will show real- life operational responses to challenges faced by the hospitality and tourism industry and/or a destination. Students will evaluate and recommend scenarios/alternatives - taking into consideration sustainable reporting, practice and relationships with key stakeholders and context to the triple bottom line approach.
Criteria used to grade this task:
The criteria for the assessment task are:
1. Evaluate and recommend scenarios / alternatives, taking into consideration sustainable reporting, practice and relationships with key stakeholders and context to the triple bottom line approach
2. Demonstrate an ability to develop a theoretical argument based on sustainability literature
3. Differentiate between businesses espousing sustainability and practicing sustainability
4. Develop a strong, credible argument.
*Assessment Task No 4: Individual Reflection
Task description: This task requires student to reflect on their insights of sustainable practices and responsible consumption after studying THH2114 this semester.
The criteria for the assessment task are:
1. Critically reflect on the process of sustainability using concepts and theories
2. Reflect upon personal consumption within T&H sector, and provide insight into managing consumer behaviour (tourists) and global challenges
3. Take responsibility for personal learning
4. Reference sources consistently and comprehensively using the recommended referencing system prescribed in the subject description
