YOUR FOCUS COMPANY IS STARBUCKS
In this module, you learned about management challenges related to human resources. The purpose of this discussion is to explore the environmental context and functions of human resources management and identify related workplace challenges.
You will use your focus company to help you complete this assessment. This same corporation will be used in several other modules throughout the course. Details on the focus area for each assessment that utilizes this company can be reviewed in the folder entitled "Focus Company" located at the top of the Learning Modules Section.
As a human resources manager, your goal is to attract, develop and maintain great employees, while staying in compliance with the law. Discuss how you would accomplish this, exploring options for how you will overcome common HR challenges.
Human Resources information is usually found in the Human Resources and Corporate Governance sections of the website as well as by reviewing the Annual Report (Investor Relations section). You may also need to use a search engine such as Google or Yahoo to find information regarding employee relations. For example, you could type the following terms into the search field: "XYZ Company labor relations," "XYZ Company employee relations," "XYZ Company union negotiation," or similar terms. Spend time locating this information. You will use it for the assessment.
Review and use the human resources information for your focus company and answer the following questions by posting 1-2 paragraphs each:
- Explain at least two ways your company would attract new employees.
- Determine at least one way to develop and maintain human resources. Support your answer. If any of the information is not available on its website, you may review their competitor to see the aspect they are missing.
- Identify two workplace challenges related to human resource management that you have been able to confirm or that could occur at this company. Explain how these challenge a manager and company to comply with at least one law listed in the "Legal Environment of Human Resource Management" section in your textbook. What will the company need to do to stay in compliance with each law? If you cannot find information based on a search outside of the company website (e.g. labor relations, employee lawsuits, etc.), you may need to base your answer on a personal challenge that you or someone that you know has faced and how it was handled.
