Coursework scenario - Your Company has been running a high volume production of a product. You as Quality Manager of the company have been provided with 10 consecutive samples of 10 items each. Tasks to be carried out and presented in a succinct (about 1500 words, 15 pages max excluding appendices) report in MS Word format.

Task 1 - Considering accuracy, range, productivity, cost, skills, etc, select an appropriate measuring instrument and both visually and analytically test the hypothesis for normal distribution of the parameter. Use the attached table to arrange the data.

Task 2 - Estimate the actual process capability. Calculate and analyse the expected number of rejects in batch of 1,000,000 items, if the specified tolerance is between 40 and 42. Make relevant comments upon achieving 6 Sigma Quality.

Task 3 - Identify and prepare appropriate quality control charts using the data from the table above. Analyse the information presented on them and compare with results obtained in (1).

Task 4 - Castor Wheel Case Scenario

You have been hired by a mid-size company producing airport 4 wheel luggage trolleys to help solving a problem with the assembly of the swivel castor wheels (Figure 1) to the trolleys that the company produces. The company have been purchasing the wheels from China as a bulk buy coming in batches (containers) of 5 000. The problem is that in some cases the positions of the holes in the fixing plate of the wheel do not quite match those on the trolley and it is impossible to bolt them together without a rework, which significantly slows down the assembly process and compromises the quality of the product. The company complained about that, but the supplier responded that the wheels are made according to a specification drawing, attached to the reply (see below, Figure 2), including positional tolerances for the holes. They claimed that they have been certified according to ISO9000 and their quality policy allows only 1% rejects (AQL), which is generally acceptable for all customers and which they as a gesture of a good will cover by supplying 1% extra units free of charge with each batch. Your company has some doubts about that statement, because on inspection some wheels are found to have holes out of the positional tolerance, but given the volume of the batch and the small size of the company's quality team (5), they could not really present a strong evidence to challenge the quality of the batch. In addition, in some cases even replacing the faulty wheel with a good one could not help to match the holes. At that point, you as a qualified quality engineer are tasked to rectify/alleviate the problem.

Constraints:

- Visit/audit to the company in China is not an option;

- Changing the supplier at this stage is not an option;

- Limited extra budget.

Considering all aspects of the situation including the quality of the out-sourced parts and those made in-house, make an impartial action plan giving as much details as possible for each step. The plan should include options according to the findings, supported with relevant technical documentation and recommendations. (Your answer should be on not more than 2 pages.)
