Military Heritage Assignment
Introduction:
It is a well-accepted fact that the past helps determine the present. Likewise, events and personalities of the past shape today's military and those same events and personalities will contribute to the military's future. The senior enlisted community must make tomorrow's leaders, regardless of rank, aware of military history so they too can advance in mission and purpose without having to repeat past mistakes. This exercise provides the student with the opportunity to explore the history and development of the United States/foreign military through research and knowledge. Additionally, as senior enlisted leaders, the ability to develop detailed written projects and/or develop and conduct an effective oral presentation is essential because providing information in a well-prepared manner often determines the success or failure of a project. This entire project, to include reference material, is unclassified.
Milestone-1 (Outline and Reference Page)
1. Students will choose a current policy, process, procedure, custom, event, equipment, ship, etc., and write an essay on the background, evolution, and importance of the topic to military heritage. It may not be a topic the student previously researched, published, or presented. Each student in the group will have a different topic approved by the FA. Students will submit their topic for approval per their FA's direction no later than Week-1, Sunday, 2359 ET.
2. Students will conduct research on the approved topic with an emphasis on military heritage. Everything in this assignment, including the references, must be unclassified.
3. Students will base research on facts from credible sources. Research should focus on facts and concepts that will support an informative presentation. Students must compile a list of references used during the development of the project. A minimum of three credible references is required.
4. Milestone-1 will include an outline and an APA formatted References* page identifying sources used. Develop an outline using the format provided in HO 1.3.
* Note: References may change over the course of essay development (i.e., the final list of references may be different from those listed at this stage of the project). That is OK.
5. The outline, and subsequent essay, must address the following main points: background, evolution, and importance. State the factual account of the ship, station, battle, individual, custom, policy, process, procedure, or event surrounding the origins of the topic. Include how the topic has evolved over time to become a part of current operations, and state why this topic is an important part of our military heritage.
