Research Methods for Managers
• You will develop analytical and practical research skills which will be directly in all modules where critical thinking is necessary and in particular during the final project modules - Consultancy Project, Internship, Research Project
Structure
• There will be TOPICS available weekly
• You will need to complete reading the topics before your weekly workshop
• There may be additional activities such as assigned reading and other tasks to complete
• In workshops, will briefly review the week's topics and work together
in your teams to complete tasks
Activity 1
• This activity is a ‘sorting' exercise of terms used in research methods
• You may have encountered these terms before in previous research, or new to research:
1. Sort the terms under appropriate headings
2. Replace Heading 1, Heading 2, etc. with the relevant category that the group of terms belong to
Research methods for managers
• During this module we will encounter each of these terms
• Due to time frame, we are not able to go in-depth in all areas, but will extensively aim to cover those terms related to research in business and management
• We will discuss a number of topics including:
• formulating your research questions
• research methodology (which includes philosophical approach, strategy and design);
• collection & analysis of quantitative/qualitative data;
• research ethics
Activity 2 - sample research proposals
• Download the two sample Research Proposals from the FILES >WEEK 1 folder
• Two samples - one achieved a High Pass and the other a Distinction
• Note the structure of each of the samples
• Which proposal was graded higher? What did you think were the best points in each? What could be improved?
The general outline below for your research proposal:
• Title of research proposal
• Introduction
• Research aims and objectives
• Literature Review and Research questions
• Research Methodology - including discussion of research philosophy, research strategy and research design
• Research Methods - include how you will collect data, sample size
• Ethics
• Research Plan - including Gantt chart
• References (Not included in word count)
• Appendices (Not included in word count)
