Report - Needs Assessment
Learning Outcome 1: Interpret the importance of performing a needs analysis in public health program development. Apply different methodologies of needs assessment to establish and prioritise community needs;
Learning Outcome 2: Develop an evidence-based Program and evaluation plan for the implementation and evaluation of a public health Program
Learning Outcome 3: Critically examine and apply the principles and strategies of community and stakeholder engagement.
Assessment Task
Needs assessments are crucial in program design, implementation and evaluation in public health, as they form the foundation for the evidence-based approach required to design and evaluate relevant, credible and contextually appropriate programs.
In this assessment, each individual in the group will need to perform a needs assessment associated with your group's chosen health challenge/target population. To generate a comprehensive understanding of the community need, the group discussion should inform the different areas that each student will focus on under a particular public health theme. Each individual will submit a 1,000 word (+/-10%) needs assessment report.
Assessment Flow Chart
Please ensure that you read the Portfolio Assessment Brief before completing this assessment.
Context
If health services are to respond to the changing health needs of their local populations, planners and managers need useful and timely information about the health status of target populations.
Task Instructions
Your needs assessment report should include the following information:
1. Background
This should include:
• A clear title of your allocated problem/topic.
• A brief literature review of the current literature that outlines the types of needs (e.g., normative, expressed, comparative or felt) in your chosen population.
• A brief discussion about the need analysis and methodological approaches (e.g., quantitative and qualitative research and systematic reviews) you have chosen to use.
2. Prioritisation of Needs
• In this section, you will prioritise the needs based on the current evidence reviewed and develop and present a problem and solution tree.
3. Justification
In this section, you need to justify your choice of priorities and outline how your needs assessment will benefit the population.
4. SWOT Analysis
In this section, you will need to identify the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats (SWOT) of your needs assessment:
a. Strengths: What unique needs did you identify that others have not?
b. Weaknesses: What are some things that your needs assessment failed to consider?
c. Opportunities: What are some areas in which you could thrive that are not currently taken advantage of?
d. Threats: What are some external factors (e.g., competitors, consumer demand or economic conditions) that could make it more difficult for you to do a needs assessment?
Format Parameters
All assessments should include a cover page that states your name, student number, assessment number and name and the word count
Referencing
It is essential that you use appropriate APA style for citing and referencing research.
Public Health Program Portfolio Assessment Overview
In this subject, the process of public health program design, implementation and evaluation is broken into two individual submissions and two group submissions that together address each step in the creation of a public health program to target a health challenge/issue with your chosen community.
Assessment Task Flow Chart
Group Formation and Topic Choice
You will be organised into groups by your learning facilitator in the first module of the trimester. Once in your groups, you need to choose a health problem/challenge that relates to one of the public health themes listed below. Your health challenge/issue should have a clear target audience. You will design a program to address this challenge/issue in this target population.
Public Health Themes
• Mental health
• Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health
• Population health
• Non-communicable disease
• Infectious disease
• Social and behavioural sciences
• Health system
• eHealth/mhealth/digital health
• Geriatric health
• Cultural and diverse communities health
Assessment 1: Needs Assessment (Individual)
Needs assessment are crucial in program design, implementation and evaluation in public health, as they form the foundation for the evidence-based approach required to design and evaluate relevant, credible and contextually appropriate public health programs.
In this assessment, each individual in the group will need to perform a needs assessment associated with your groups chosen health challenge/target population. To generate a comprehensive understanding of the community need, the group discussion should inform the need that each student will focus on under a particular public health theme. Each individual will submit a 1,000 word (+/-10%) needs assessment report.
Assessment 2: Design, Plan, Implementation and Evaluation (Group) Part A: Group Presentation: Objectives, Strategies and Logic Model
The culmination of individual needs assessments will mean that your group now has a comprehensive and complex understanding of the need within your target population. It is now time to start planning! In Assessment 2, your group will be required to present a blueprint of your program plan to your fellow students. In this presentation (10-minyour group needs to outline your s objectives and strategies and present your logic model. You will also be expected to answer questions (for 3 minutes) from your peers and your learning facilitator.
Part B: Group Report: Program Planning, Implementation and Evaluation
Incorporating the feedback provided by your learning facilitator and your peers from Part A, your group now needs to complete your program plan. This report (1,500 words
+/-10%) will be a clear and concise presentation of the results of your group's collaboration through each phase of the program planning, implementation and evaluation process.
All key diagrams also need to be presented in this report.
Assessment 3: Reflection on Program Planning Process and Collaboration
Critical reflection is an important part of your professional development as a public health practitioner. The final assessment in this subject provides each individual group member with the opportunity to write a reflection (800 words +/-10%) on the process of public health program planning. A template is provided with questions to help facilitate your reflection on the challenges you have faced and the growth you have experience working in a collaborative environment to create a complex and comprehensive public health program.
