Health Profile
This assignment is designed to assess students' competency in terms of basic maternal and child health knowledge-in particular use of data to identify issues related to health status and health disparities, to determine needs of a population for purposes of designing a program, and their ability to offer strategies to address identified needs.
Please choose a geographic area that you will study for your health profile. In prior semesters this was limited to one of New Jersey's 21 counties. This year you may choose one of those or another county, city, state, or country. Note however that while NJSHAD provides the necessary date for New Jersey counties, if you choose a geographic area outside of New Jersey the data sources will be different (e.g, the National Center for Health Statistics, the World Health Organization, or Demographic and Health Surveys). Please contact the instructor if you would like to discuss alternative data sources.
You will develop a written profile that includes data on both maternal and child health in your chosen geographic area. The profile should provide demographics, key maternal and child health indicators, and information on important maternal and child health services available in that geographic area.
The recommended length of the written profile is around 10 pages (including title page and table of contents, text, and tables/figures), single spaced size 11 font with 1 inch margins. However, this is just a recommendation. It is more important that you have all the content outlined in the rubric than a specific length/format. The paper can be longer or shorter if needed. No specific formatting is required, as long as it is legible.
Data from recent years is preferable, but just note in your description if you are only able to find data from several years ago and include it anyway.
Profiles should also address disparities within the geographic area (for example, among municipalities within the county) or by other characteristics (e.g., race/ethnicity, socioeconomic status, differences by immigration status) in maternal and child health outcomes. For example, if you choose a county that has a black infant mortality rate that is higher than the rate for the state as a whole, this should be noted in the summary.
Where possiblethe profile should present data for your chosen geographic area and comparison data for the larger region or a comparable geographic area. For example, if you choose a country, you could compare data from neighboring countries and the region as a whole.
I ask that you not use visual effects that make pie charts or bar charts appear three-dimensional (3D). Although the evidence is mixed on whether using charts that appear to be 3D v. 2D affects comprehension, I discourage 3D effects because they distort the data and are unnecessary. If you want to include a chart with 3D effects that was depicted that way in a report or website that you copied it from, that is acceptable, but please do not add these effects if you are creating your own chart. You can obtain data and create visuals in NJSHAD like the Module 5 data exploration activity.
In addition to a presentation of tables and graphs, the profile should include discussion of the data presented along with a summary and conclusions about maternal and child health in the area. The profile should also include a list of relevant data sources used in creating the profile.Note that if you create figures through the NJSHAD website, you do not need to cite the specifics of where NJSHAD got the data. All you need to do is cite NJSHAD. However, if you are copying figures from a specific published report, you should cite that specific report.
A final written section of the profile will summarize and address problems and inequities. If possible, you should interview one representative of a hospital, health department, or community-based organization about the maternal and child health needs in your chosen geographic area. Based on the area's maternal and child health needs, choose one critical problem that you will identify and address.
The final profile will be graded based on the following
• Title page, table of contents, layout and graphics, writing
• Relevant basic demographics of the area
• Maternal health section (data on women of childbearing age, maternal mortality, prenatal care, breastfeeding, smoking behavior, substance use)
• Child health section (data on preterm birth rate, infant mortality, low birthweight, neonatal and child mortality, child poverty, high school graduation rates)
• 4 points-Available maternal and child health programs (data on hospitals in area, neonatal intensive care units, maternal and child health consortium, other related programs)
• 5 points-Summary andconclusions where you point out important indicators, health disparities, andcompare your area with other areas
You should include at least a few statistics from each category for your chosen geographic area (demographics, maternal health, child health, available programs/services). If you cannot find data on a given topic (for instance, maternal mortality is a difficult one since the numbers may be low enough to be suppressed), you can replace it with another indicator in the same category and/or show data on that topic for the state or a larger area as a whole.
Child mortality is a somewhat difficult indicator to find. County health ratings should have the information if you are studying a county. Here is an example of the information they have for Middlesex: Middlesex . Child mortality can be found under "Additional Health Outcomes (not included in overall ranking)"
In addition to the written profile, you will be asked to record a final presentation of the summary of your area's characteristics and maternal and child health issues and services, the role of the person you interviewed and lessons learned, and problems that might be important for the area's legislative body or advocacy. For your chosen critical problem, you should summarize:
• The maternal and child health problem or gap in services that you chose and why
• Data or supporting previous research for your problem or potential responses
• Realistic ways to solve the problem, decrease negative health outcomes, and/or improve services
You are required to record yourself giving a presentation. You can do this on Kaltura or on Zoom/Webex with the screen-sharing function. It can be just audio with slides and no video if preferred.Your presentation should be about 5 minutes long (it can be slightly longer or shorter).
