Growth, Development and Ageing for Exercise Scientists Assessment Task - Video Critique Instructions
This assessment task will assess your ability to apply key concepts of growth, development and ageing to a series of case clients. This is very important for demonstrating your knowledge of the unit content, and to apply it to 'real world' scenarios.
This assessment task satisfies the following Learning Outcomes -
- Recall and describe the stages of growth, development and ageing, and the injuries or conditions that commonly present during these stages.
- Describe the effect of structural, physiological, social and cognitive changes on exercise performance and participation across the lifespan.
- Categorise exercises as indicated/contraindicated for particular stages of growth, development and ageing.
Description of the assessment task -
For the video critique, you are required to develop a written critique of the content in the video provided to you. In your critique, you should consider:
- Case notes + CASE STUDY -develop some case notes that will inform your subsequent critique and recommendations based on your observations of the situation.
- Exercise selection -Describe how appropriate the choice of exercises for the clients based on their hypothetical stage of growth, development or ageing? You should consider the present structural, physiological, social and/or cognitive stages; as well as any injuries or conditions that commonly present during their life stage. Which exercises would you consider to be indicated or contraindicated?
- Recommendations - Do you have any recommendations for how the physical activity session could be improved based on the client's stage of growth, development and/or ageing?
STRUCTURE (for Presentation)
Structure your report using headings and sub-headings as appropriate and include a list of references. Please use 11 or 12 point font in any conventional format (e.g., Times New Roman, Calibri) with line spacing of 1.5. Please also justify your work.
Video Critique Report -
Purpose: A key skill as a future exercise professional is to be able to recognise key indications and contraindications to exercise. For this assessment task, you will be required to critique the suitability (or lack thereof) of a physical activity session for two individuals.
Step 1: Watch the video entitled "Old man weights"
Step 2: As you are watching the video, make notes on the suitability of the physical activity session for the two individuals ((an older adult >65 years vs. the younger adult @ 25 years as pictured below). You might like to watch the videos several times, paying attention to different aspects (e.g., physiological development, cognitive development) at each viewing.
Step 3: Using the template provided to you as a guide of information to include (please note this is not designed with all the required formatting) develop a report that includes:
Case notes + CASE STUDY - Ignoring the fact that the video is clearly a parody, develop some case notes for each individual that will inform your subsequent critique and recommendations based on your observations of the situation. The key case notes should provide accurate information about the two clients and must refer to the relevant structural, physiological, social and or cognitive aspects and potential injuries or common conditions where appropriate. Three points for each individual is recommended. You will then need to create a short CASE STUDY for each client, focusing on the structural, physiological, social and/or cognitive stages of the older vs. younger adult. Use the case notes to help you build the case study!!!!!
Exercise selection - Again ignoring the fact that the video is a parody, how appropriate is the choice of exercises for the individuals based on their hypothetical stage of growth, development or ageing? You should consider the present structural, physiological, social and/or cognitive stages of the older vs. younger adult; as well as any injuries or conditions that commonly present during their life stage. Which exercises would you consider to be indicated or contraindicated (ie. recommended or notrecommended)?
Recommendations - With reference to your case notes, make recommendations for how the physical activity session could be improved based on the client's stage of growth, development and/or ageing?
