IKEA's cost-effective business model is a key strength as IKEA is producing the furniture at lower cost and selling that furniture at lower prices that attract the price sensitive customers. IKEA's distribution channel is very strong and it builds strong relationships with its suppliers and its customers. IKEA Group owns factories in three towns (??, ??, ??), which distribute to three retail stores in three cities (??, ??, ??).

However, during the present pandemic, IKEA has seen a major drop in demand for its furniture as the housing market has declined. Based on the forecast of interest rates, the head of operations feels that demand for housing and thus its product will remain depressed for the foreseeable future. The forecasted weekly demand for the coming year is: Store ?? require 30 units, Store ?? require 65 units, Store ?? require 40 units. While the factory availability in units per week are: Factory ?? has 35 units, Factory ?? has 50 units and Factory ?? has 50 units. The costs of transporting each factory to each store are as follows: Factory ??: $4, $3, $3; Factory ??: $6, $7, $6; and Factory ??: $8, $2, $5.

Based on the above case, answer following questions:

a.Develop a transportation table. Formulate an initial feasible solution to IKEA transportation problem using the northwest corner rule.

b.Evaluate the various configuration to determine the optimal solution that will minimise the total transportation cost by using Stepping Stone method.

c.Determine which configuration will minimizes total transportation costs.
