Information systems are vital in managing large-scale international events, ensuring operational efficiency and enhanced experiences for participants and spectators. The Olympic Games serve as an excellent example, where various information systems are deployed for event scheduling, athlete management, and spectator services.
For this assignment, students will develop a structured database for an integrated system managing various aspects of the Paris Olympic Games 2024. This includes athlete accommodations, event scheduling, and additional services provided to athletes and spectators.
Assignment Components:
Part A:
Design and develop a comprehensive database using ERD and SQL, addressing the following aspects:
The scheduling and allocation of events to different venues and times.
Management of athlete accommodations, including assignment to rooms based on team and individual needs, type of sport and nationality.
Tracking and management of equipment and resources for each sport, including inventory levels, distribution, and maintenance schedules.
It will be able to manage volunteer assignments, including roles, schedules, and associated training sessions for the different events and activities at the Games.
Part B:
Prepare a report using data analytics tools to identify challenges and provide data-driven recommendations to improve the management of future events.
Task Details:
Choose one of the areas mentioned in Part A and create a database using SQL. Your database should include:
An ER diagram using Chen's notation.
A complete database project using SQL for construction and implementation.
Dummy data to simulate real-world scenarios for data retrieval and analysis.
As a data analyst, compile a report for the Chief Operating Officer (COO) of the Paris Olympic Games organizing committee. Highlight key areas for reducing operational costs and improving efficiency, based on the data available. Propose potential organizational improvements and support your analysis with SQL queries.
Your report should ideally feature five business insights, with each being valued at 2 marks. You are encouraged to include more than five insights to ensure a strong score, even though some insights may not be relevant to the chosen business scenarios.
Your report should detail the database design process, the rationale behind the selected queries, and the implications of the findings.
