Assignment:

1. Decide on a topic/argument related to new media that you find interesting. Develop a strong position on this topic. Be sure your position considers and how the topic connects to status quo: either pushing back against status quo or maintaining status quo.
   • If you're unsure if your topic and position are suitable for the opinion writing assignment, email your teacher for feedback before you move on.
2. Conduct research to ensure that you have a strong understanding of the topic and to gather possible supporting evidence.
3. Use lateral reading strategies to assess your research sources and to determine their accuracy, credibility, and potential biases.
4. Plan your opinion piece considering
   • your audience and purpose
   • how you will best present and argue your position
   • how you will use rhetorical appeals and devices
   • connections to media theories discussed in the unit (e.g. post-literacy, the global village, retribalization, the medium is the message, media filters, "content is no longer important," echo chambers, etc.)
5. Write first draft considering the points provided on the previous pages and lessons on the art of writing from the first unit.
