Assessment Task 1: Task description Diverse values and different understandings of sustainability can lead to conflict. In this assignment, your task is to find a local, current sustainability issue involving at least three stakeholders that will enable you to explore how different interests, beliefs and values inform each of the stakeholders' perspectives.Take care to select a specific challenge with identifiable stakeholders. For instance, while "coastal erosion" is a major issue in Australia, you might choose current debates in communities, such as Port Lonsdale (Victoria) or Byron Bay (NSW), so as to clearly identify the local communities, government and other stakeholders involved. For this reason. we stipulate "local" to encourage you to think about site specific examples rather than broader issues. By locating a site, you will be able to identify specific stakeholders, such as "Byron Shire General Manager [full name]" rather than simply, "local council". This task is in two parts:
Part A: Stakeholder map
Using the template provided in MyLO:
• Develop a 'stakeholder map' that fits on one A4-page.
• Identify the name and role of each stakeholder in your chosen local sustainability issue" and, in a sentence or using a direct quote. characterise their perspective.
• Using images to illustrate your map is optional.
You are encouraged to use online media, such as news sites and other websites, and public social media pages (not from private or closed groups, chats or posts) to find a local challenge and the perspectives of stakeholders. If you wish to conduct an interview to gather a particular opinion you must submit a completed, signed interview consent form with your assignment.
Part B: Reflection
In this essay, you are asked to draw on the readings and content from the unit to:
• Compare and contrast how ideas about sustainability were defined by the different stakeholders on your map; and
• Describe how these actors use narrative devices (such as stories, metaphor or particular words) to express their values; and. k
All sources of information in Parts A and B need to be referenced using Harvard Referencing. You can use a single reference list (which appears at the end of your essay) for both parts A and B.
