• Gay, lesbian and bisexual people are a minority in the overall Australian population, and often seen by ‘mainstream' society as deviant. Until recent times gay sexual activities were illegal in most Australian states. Negative stereotypes of gay men in particular, often associated with health issues such as HIV/AIDs, are still prevalent, although current rights and advocacy initiatives have addressed some of this discrimination.
• Gender roles are culturally and socially defined. Sexuality may be influenced by social and cultural values, socialisation and other environmental factors; there is also growing evidence that sexuality is also genetically determined. Sexual orientation is a significant aspect of a person's self-concept, social image and status.
• Marcel is gay or bisexual, homeless, unemployed and has a criminal record. These factors all contribute to negative stereotyping which forms a potential barrier to his attaining secure accommodation, employment, education and training, and forming positive relationships with others.
• Gender roles and how to form relationships are learned mainly within the family (whatever constitutes ‘family' for the individual). Marcel's family structure and relationships and his experience of abuse are a significant factor contributing to his current situation and issues, including his substance use.
