Part 1: Role-play scenario

To complete this part of the assessment, you will be required to participate in a role-play with the aid of teachers/ assessors or actors who will portray Jane and Fred who have co-existing mental health and alcohol and other drug issues. You, along with Jane and Fred will need to act out the scenario script in front of your assessor. The people portraying Jane and Fred will be organised by the teacher or assessor.Your demonstration will be used as part of the overall evidence requirements of the unit.You should refer to the list of criteria provided in the Observation Checklist to understand what skills need to be demonstrated in this part of the assessment. This Checklist outlines the Performance Criteria, Performance Evidence and Assessment Conditions your assessor will be marking you on.This role play will be observed by the assessor Once completed you will need to submit the written documentation to their assessor for marking.

Prior to the role-play, you will be required to:

  • Access the templates required for the role-play (Appendix 1)
  • Familiarise yourself with the skills you are required to demonstrate - these are detailed in Part 2: Observation Checklist
  • Read the case note outlining a brief scenario of the couple. (This will be given to you by your assessor 15 minutes prior to the role play)

During the role-play you will be required to demonstrate the following:

  1. Interviewing Fred and Jane using a strength-based/ motivational interviewing approach completing assessment forms during the process.
  2. Demonstrate an understanding of Jane and Fred's co-existing Mental Health and Alcohol and other drug's needs.
  3. Able to explain information to Jane and Fred in a way that reflects their cultural sensitivity, principles of empowerment and inclusion.
  4. Work collaboratively with Jane and Fred to determine referral options, and identify other relevant services in consultation with Fred and Jane and in line with the organisational protocols.
  5. Develop a safety net with Jane and Fred to help identify any potential triggers or risks to safety and look at strategies to manage these risks including providing a contingency option.
  6. Assess Jane and Fred's stage of change using appropriate questioning
  7. Work collaboratively with Jane and Fred to develop goals and strategies and make informed choices about recovery options.
  8. Able to identify and describe their approach to recovery-oriented practices using harm minimisation as a practice model when working with Jane and Fred.
  9. You must demonstrate awareness of legal obligations including policies, ethical consideration around duty of care, dignity of risk, code of practice, discrimination, informed consent, mandatory reporting, confidentiality, privacy, rights and responsibilities and disclosure
  10. Discuss Jane and Fred's existing services and supports, and talk to them about collaborating with new services.
