Over-achievers in the 1990s prided themselves on getting little sleep.

In addition to long hours at the workplace, technological devices such as laptop computers, email, voice mail, and the Internet make it possible to work into the wee hours of the night. Sleeping less meant they could work more and, thus, be more successful. By 2000, however, sleep had become a new status symbol for successful executives. Jeff Bezos of Amazon, Marc Andreesen of Netscape, and Michael Bonsignore of Honeywell were just a few of the extremely successful top- management executives who reported that getting eight hours of sleep each night left them refreshed, alert, and creative. This increased mental acuity played a major role in their success as executives. Today, insufficient sleep is more characteristic of less-successful, lower-level managers.
