ASSESSMENT 2
You will be required to participate in a role play with the assessor. In the role play your assessor will be playing the role of Toni the shop assistant, and the you will be playing the role of the store manager.
Role Pla Scenario:
Toni works as a travel agent in your Travel Agency. Over the last three weeks there have been two workplace accidents at the store, involving two of his colleagues. One of these accidents resulted in a colleague tripping over a stock box in the storage room and spraining his ankle. This accident occurred due to there being no storage shelves to pack boxes of brochures away. The other accident involved a colleague pulling a muscle in his back by lifting brochure boxes. This staff member did not have access to any resources that could have assisted him to move these boxes.
Toni feels that there is no system in place to deal with workplace health and safety issues at the store.
The safety hazards that caused the two accidents have not been adequately addressed and Toni fears that another accident may happen. Toni has never been trained in WHS by his employer, and no accident reports have been completed by his colleagues for these two accidents.
Student Assessment Information:
In the role play Toni (role-played by your assessor) has scheduled a meeting with you, the store manager to discuss this. You are to ensure that you cover all of the below areas in your meeting. Use the information you have been given above and your knowledge of good WHS work practises when consulting Toni. Put your recommendations forward about the changes that need to take place in the store and how the company might be able to improve safety within the store.
• Prior to the meeting refresh your knowledge of WHS guidelines, policies and procedures developed in Assessment 1
• Ensure that you communicate clearly and concisely using appropriate language, and adapt your communication style to encompass any cultural differences or language barriers
• Follow WHS regulations and hazard identification processes
• Listen to Toni's concerns
• Provide Toni with some recommendations to improve workplace safety at the store
• Outline your recommendations to ensure that staff are made aware of WHS policies in the workplace
• Suggest a way that staff could be involved in the process of creating a system to deal with WHS issues
• Request a follow up meeting with Toni to further discuss the outcomes
• Provide a written response to Toni to conclude this matter
ASSESSMENT 3
Workplace Hazard and Risk Assessment simply means looking at the work task and considering what is the safest way to complete it.
prevent an injury.
It is a way of becoming aware of the hazards involved in doing the job and taking action to
A well developed Hazard and Risk Assessment process is suitable for different tasks and industries, and does not require enormous amounts of time or use endless pieces of paper
PART A - You are to look at your current workplace (or your RTO if undertaking this assessment outside of a workplace), and consider an appropriate method to identify, report and record associated hazards and risks. This requires you to:
• consult with workers or others to gain an appropriate level of understanding of what their job roles are (to help you identify possible hazards).
• listen to any concerns or issues raised by others
• consider the working environment
• record the outcomes of your discussions and observations, and develop an appropriate Hazard and Risk assessment checklist.
You are to submit your checklist to your assessor before commencing Part B. You may use the Hazard & Risk Checklist developed in Assessment 1 for this task
PART B - Using the hazard and risk assessment checklist developed in Part A (or assessment 1), you are to undertake a comprehensive risk assessment of your workplace (or RTO):
Be sure to:
• Document the activity: Assemble those involved in the activity and then, using the hazard and risk checklist, document the tasks that make up the activity, step by step. Be sure to consider any Safe Method Work Statements available, along with internal WHS Policy and Procedures
• Identify the hazards: Next to each task, identify what part of the task may cause injury to those doing the work or to anyone else nearby.
PART C - Next, you are to consider the hazards and risks identified, and develop, select and implement appropriate WHS risk controls (within a risk register developed in Assessment 1, or one sourced and suitable for this task).
Be sure to:
• Document the control measures: For each identified hazard, list the measures that need to be put in place to eliminate or minimise any likely risk of injury to those involved. You are to also indicate the cost associated with each control
• Identify who is responsible: Document the name of the person responsible for implementing the control measure.
• Implement the control measures.
• Update the SWMS and WHS Management System to reflect the changes
The and risk assessment a written record of the process to be used to on a task.
