Reading domain:
Fluency
Case study:
Connor: a fourth grade student and his teacher, Mr.Clark is having a hard time figuring out why he's struggling with his reading. When Connor reads out loud, he sounds very choppy, with long pauses when he gets to an unfamiliar or big word. At times, Connor will only move his lips to sound out a word, but there are instances when it's a longer word, that he will actually make the sounds out loud and then blend. Connor is one of 5 children, he has 2 older sisters and 2 younger twin brothers. Connor's parents are divorced, his father lives out of state, and he and his siblings are new to the school this year, so it is not know if he attended a preschool or pre-k program. It seems that at home, Connor mostly reads to his older sisters as mom is very busy with his younger brothers From what information Mr. Clark was able to collect, when Connor does read at home with his older sisters, he stumbles a lot, loses his place, and gets frustrated and shuts down quickly. His sisters feel bad for him and end up reading to him instead. When reading in school, Coonor seems very flat as he reads with very little or no expression-almost sounding like a robot. On a positive note, he does have about 95% accuracy with his oral reading, however, he takes 3 to 4 times longer than his peers to read a passage. Mr. Clark has noticed that Connor is growing more and more frustrated and seems to be embarrassed if asked to read. He has made it clear that he doesn't want to read aloud in front of the class.
