HCS Project

Due to the development of a new regional shopping center, a major new intersection must be provided for significant movements into and out of the shopping center. The main entrance to the shopping center is on the North side of the intersection. The expected demands for the new intersection are given below. There will be 3% trucks into and out of shopping center and 1% trucks everywhere else. There are 20 buses per hour stopping on the right side of each approach in all directions except leaving the shopping center, which has zero.

The tasks for this project are as follows:

Task 1. Develop a physical design for the intersection, that is, how many lanes and what channelization for the lanes.

Task 2. Develop a complete signal timing plan - assume a pre-timed signal.

Task 3. Using HCS software, run an HCM analysis of how the intersection is expected to operate under the proposed design and signal timing. You may not have any lane groups with LOS of E or F. You do not want lane group v/c ratios greater than 0.95

Task 4. The fewer lanes you use and still keep a LOS of D or better, the higher your grade.

Task 5. Make sure the design works in the simulation

The paper was on the practical design of a physical intersection. The problem requires special consideration and determination of the number of lanes that will efficiently manage traffic flow in and out of a shopping center.Special consideration was on the total flow of traffic through the shopping centre and vehicles which do not have to go through the shopping centre.
