Developing a Successful Coaching Philosophy Use the following steps in developing your personal coaching philosophy. This should be a two page document that outlines your responses to each of the first seven steps and culminates in a paragraph personal philosophy. This should be done in APA style with a cover page, Times New Roman 12-point font, double spaced, with any references cited in the paper and a references page, if necessary.
Step 1 - Identify your values. Make a list of at least three, but you can list more, values you plan to adhere to as a coach. Use chapter four as a guide for these values. Some examples are respect, responsibility, trust, fair, caring, and honesty. Come up with your own group of values. Step 2 - Establish your own personal belief. Provide an action statement for each value you listed in step 1. For example, "Respect - be respectful of other people, officials, and opponents".
Step 3 - Develop a personal mission statement. A mission statement is a formal summary of the aims and values of a company, organization, or individual. details about a personal mission statement that continues to build off steps 1 and 2. For example "My mission is to provide a meaningful experience to my athletes while enhancing their skills and values in life through sports. I aim to provide them with the opportunities for physical, social, emotional, and mental enhancement that will lead them to become a good and productive citizen."
Step 4 - Determine personal standards of performance. put down your personal standards for performance in various areas. As a coach you will need to think specifically about three areas. 1. Physically 2. Academically 3. Personally
Step 5 - Identify the purpose of sports to you. what you believe is the purpose of sports to you. Use chapter 2, coaching objectives, to assist you with this.
Step 6 - Develop a mission statement for your team. Using all the information you have developed in steps 1 through 5, write a mission statement for your team. Unlike your personal mission statement, this will be quite a bit longer. I am including the mission statement for Currey Ingram Academy as an example. Do not use their mission statement, develop your own. "Mustang Athletics is committed to excellence in athletics while supporting the educational mission of Currey Ingram Academy. We meet student-athletes at their individual skill levels and educational needs and provide a challenging environment for skill development in both team and individual sports. Mustang Athletics is connected to the whole student: academically, socially, emotionally, and physically through intentional preparation and planning throughout the school day and season. We focus on creating opportunities for all student-athletes to develop skills through individual instruction, peer interaction and competition. While winning is not an end in itself, we believe that our student-athletes efforts to be their best will lead them to succeed. Our mission is that all individuals associated with Mustang Athletics (coaches, staff, student-athletes, alumni, and parents) will value character traits developed through athletic participation. We expect all participants to respect themselves and others, demonstrate loyalty, be good teammates and put the team before themselves, handle failure like they handle success, have school pride, have a strong work ethic, be honest, and show up and be prepared."
Step 7 - Set standards of performance for your team. put down your standards for performance you expect from your team in various areas. Think of this as similar to a code of conduct. There are three areas that are important to think about. 1. Academically - for example "Students will attend 90% of their classes and maintain a 2.5 grade point average. 2. Athletically - The team will have an 80% free-throw percentage for the season. 3. In the community - Team members will assist with the annual Special Olympics event held at the school track.
Step 8 - put your coaching philosophy. Use all the information you created in steps 1 through 7 to write a paragraph statement outlining your coaching philosophy. Use what you have discovered about your coaching objectives and your coaching style as a guide, as well as the above information. Use chapters 1 through 4 to help you with this.
