Schweitzer (2010) outlines ten tips that can help one develop a more values-driven business.
Each of the following hypothetical situations highlight an individual or organization applying one of these ten tips. For each hypothetical situation below, identify which of the ten tips is most clearly being applied and briefly explain how it is being applied.
a) Yasmin operates a social enterprise that she founded five years ago. She recently joined an informal group of social entrepreneurs who gather monthly to share their experiences and discuss ideas relevant to the field of social entrepreneurship.
b) Sam operates a co-operative grocery store. It is located in a community that had limited access to fresh fruits and vegetables prior to its opening. Sam's grocery store relies on the free labour of its members (who earn credits that can be spent in the store) and the regular prices paid by non-members. Despite a lack of donations or government grants, the grocery store has been doing very well.
c) Darnell is an organizational expert who has helped grow a number of businesses, social enterprises and charities in his career. He has been recently hired by a social enterprise that has had modest success in its first year of operations and is looking to expand.
d) Ana is the founder of a social enterprise seeking to increase access to low-cost tutoring services for students from low-income families. Each year, they publish a document on the enterprise's website that provides details on its finances and the progress made with respect to its social mission.
e) Kelly operates a social enterprise that is working to resolve the issue of food insecurity in Toronto. As a number of the enterprise's volunteers deal with food insecurity themselves, Kelly keeps the refrigerator in the lunch room stocked with essentials that any employee or volunteer could use to make themselves something to eat.
