Assignment - Predator Data Management Strategy
ASSIGNMENT OVERVIEW -
For the assignment, you are requested to develop a mock data management strategy for New Zealand's Department of Conservation initiative called Predator Free 20501. As a part of this initiative, the National Cat Management Strategy Group (NCMSG) calls for nationwide mandatory microchipping and desexing of domestic cats when ownership is transferred as part of an increased focus on responsible pet ownership.
The NCMSG recognizes the many inherent positive benefits and value of cat ownership, and supports responsible cat ownership, while acknowledging the problems associated with cat overpopulation and feral cats. Feral cats are different to stray cats: neither are owned, but strays have varying interactions and dependence on humans while feral cats are wild. Feral cats have a major impact on native birds, bats, lizards, mice, weta and other insects.
Needless to say a complete data management strategy lies far beyond the scope of this assignment, however this assignment will allow you to consolidate the lecture and tutorial material from this course, and help you prepare for the final exam.

The primary resource for understanding what is to be included in the data strategy is Chapter 1, Section 2.6 Data Management Strategy from the recommended reading for this course: Earley, S., Henderson, D., Data Management Association. (2017). The Data Management Body of Knowledge (2nd ed.). Technics Publications.
The source of context-relevant information to be analysed for the data strategy is the New Zealand National Cat Management Strategy Discussion Paper 2017. While it is a formidable document, in volume and scope, the National Cat Management Strategy Discussion Paper, contains a lot of information not relevant to the data management strategy. It is suggested that you examine the document, choose the relevant parts of the content, and focus on analysing those.
You may use any online resources related to the concepts on and around data management strategy in general, but, please don't let yourself to be led astray from the task at hand. All other resources used in the development of the data strategy need to be appropriately referenced.
A successful assignment submission will need to demonstrate the following:
- Understanding of the fundamental concepts related to data management.
- Ability to apply the theoretical knowledge on data management to a practical context.
- Understanding of the relationship between the high-level business strategy goals and the high-level course of action.
- Ability to analyse requirements and formalise them in an appropriate format at the appropriate level of detail.
- Understanding of conceptual data modelling at the appropriate level as it is related to the process of data strategy development; ability to produce a conceptual model.
- Understanding of the concepts related to data quality and data quality indicators.
