Homework: Literacy

In this module, you are asked to develop a reading center (real or imagined). Using the following guidelines, please develop a classroom reading area that is developmentally appropriate based on the age of the children. Write a reflection that describes your process, the changes/additions you made, and how your classroom environment will support best practices for early reading. Be sure to respond to the following guiding questions:

I. Environment: What will your reading area look like and why? Provide detailed examples.

II. Activities: Provide examples of readings activities you will provide.

III. Types: Develop a list of books that you will include. What types of books should teachers share with children, and why?

IV. Sharing Books: What skills are important to do and emphasize when books are read to children? What did you learn about informational books and their importance to young children? Examples include; phonological awareness, syllables (discuss onset and rime), phonemes, phonemic awareness. How will this be addressed in the classroom?

V. Describe methods of early reading teaching and key features of instruction such as organization, procedures, and activities. How will this be addressed in the classroom environment?

VI. Phonological Awareness: Why is phonological awareness so important? Why is this something children must be able to do before teaching them to read? How will you address this in the classroom environment?

For the written homework in this module, you are asked to develop a reading center in your classroom that includes techniques we learned about in the assigned readings; storybook reading, interactive storybook reading, big-books, creative dramatics, puppets, and art projects. Please select one area in your classroom that is either a strength or a challenges in your classroom environment. If it's a strength, tell us why it is effective and provide some evidence. If it's a challenge provide a research-based rationale on your proposed changes. For example, if you would like to add an alphabet word wall, please share your reasoning behind this strategy, and take a picture to show us your work in progress. If you do not work in a program, create a reading center in your home, or pretend to develop one.
