Dopamine is a neurotransmitter that, among other effects, sets off the "pleasure response" in the brain. As a person continues to smoke, that excess of dopamine creates a type of euphoria in the brain. Also, as one continues to smoke, more nicotine receptors appear on the neurons Smokers have billions more nicotine receptors than non-smokers. When someone tries to quit smoking, that leaves the receptors open and drops the dopamine levels in the brain, which is why they experience such strong feelings of withdrawal
