Networking Assignment - AJM Networking Services
Unit Learning Outcomes:
1. Investigate how computer networks use networking communications protocols to provide effective and secure access to networking services and resources.
2. Investigate computer network design to meet client requirements.
3. Develop a computer network to meet client requirements.
Assignment Brief and Guidance: You are employed as a training Network Engineer by an AJM Networking Services and have been asked to investigate and explain networking principles and devices.
You will need to produce a report for the CEO that includes the following:
1. Explanation of protocols and devices, including benefits and constraints of different network types and models.
2. Explanation of the characteristics and functions of network components.
3. Analysis of the functions of different network components required to construct different network types.
4. Explain the need for network design and planning strategies.
5. Use the details in Part 2 to design a network to meet client requirements. You will need to make a list of requirements from the information given. This list will be the client requirements.
6. Make sure you justify the design decisions made, showing how the design will fulfil its purpose and meet client requirements.
7. Evaluate different network models and their suitability to meet different client requirements.
8. Evaluate the network design, where you motivate each part of the design.
Part 2 Scenario and context:
You are working on a project for a local International College. You will need to analyse the specification from this institution for to design a network to meet client requirements
People: 200 students, 15 teachers, 12 marketing and administration staff, 5 higher managers including the head of academics (Director of Studies), the programme manager and 2 computer network administrators.
Resources and building: They require 25 student computers in the Labs and a total of 25 staff computers.
Floor 1: Lab1: 25 student computers, one printer and 3 staff computers.
Floor 2: Lab2: 25 student computers, one printer and 3 staff computers.
Ground Floor: Two offices and a staffroom. Office 1, requires one computer and one printer, Office 2 requires 8 computers and one printer and finally the Staff room needs 10 computers and one printer.
Floors one and two have the offices on the same side of the building and they are the same size. The ground floor is slightly bigger and has been divided into three parts as explained above.
A rough layout has been drawn for you to use as a reference:

You will need to have a server on the Ground floor and you must explore a range of possible servers and server types to implement in this network. It is important to mention cost and performance and justify the cost of your server recommendation. You have to decide on the topology and protocols for the network and discuss how they allow for efficient use of this new network.
The network should be quick and effective and should have some redundancy i.e. extra cables and ports for future expansion. You have been asked to keep costs down, but mostly to ensure you motivate why you have chosen a specific device or service. You may want to prepare an alternative lower cost option and include it in your findings. (Do this for the most expensive devices only). The company has a budget of £20000.
Final task:
9. Use any software available (e.g. PacketTracer from Cisco, at tinyurl.com/DPT111) to develop the network you have planned.
10. Produce a test plan to test if the requirements have been met. Also:
a. Design a questionnaire to get user feedback on the design.
b. Analyse the feedback and act from it.
11. Make a comment on each user requirement and whether it has been met or not. If it has not been met, explain what you can change and explain if the changes were successful.
12. Look back on all the designs (plans) you have made and all the choices you have made and evaluate implemented optimised network against client requirements.
