Assessment - Tender Methodology

The aim of this assessment is to assess your understanding regarding the different elements of a building project including foundation, substructure, structure, envelope and interiors, analyse weather-proofing principles and describe the provision and accommodation of different building services in relation to the case study provided. Use any photographs, drawings, plans and ideas to support your answers. Remember all answers must comply with the NZBC and industry practice.

This is an individual report you are required to produce a 4500-5000 word document highlighting the key points given based on learning outcomes 2, 3, 4 and 5. Your work must illustrate, discuss and bring out findings from your investigations.

Assessment Instructions

The construction company you work for are developing a tender bid proposal for the construction of the proposed project. Refer to the project documentation provided in Moodle. As part of the tender requirements, you must prepare a tender methodology. This will demonstrate to the client that you understand the project and have the ability to foresee risks and add value, to deliver a quality project on time, within budget and to the client's satisfaction.

1. Develop a comprehensive tender methodology report. Your methodology must address all of the following:

a. Clearly summarize the project.

b. Identify key project goals, constraints and risks.

c. Describe the main elements of the permanent works - substructure, structure, envelop, interior (such as; precast columns and beams, curtain wall, internal partitions, etc.).

d. Describe the building services (e.g., hot & cold water, plumbing, drainage, electrical, HVAC, fire, lifts) in terms of; overall purpose, major components, and key safety features. Explain your processes to coordinate services installation to avoid unnecessary re-work.

e. Describe the various types of bracing elements that may be used to provide lateral stability in medium or large buildings. Describe the bracing elements (if any) used on the proposed building.

f. Compare the options for structural frames, including; insitu concrete, precast concrete, structural steel, and structural timber (post-tensioned or cross-laminated timber (CLT)), in terms of; materials used, timing requirements, site and transport constraints, fire rating, ability to make changes.

g. Compare two suitable cladding systems, in terms of; materials used, timing requirements, installation sequence, weather-proofing principles, fire properties, and durability and maintenance requirements. Recommend one of the two compared.

h. Compare two suspended floor systems, in terms of materials used, installation sequence, timing requirements, and general cost implications. Recommend one alternative to that specified.

i. Explain the key principles of passive fire design and the key factors to consider during design and construction in order to fulfil the passive fire design requirements (see fire report provided).
