Practical Assessment
The Practical Assessment is a set of tasks that must be completed in a workplace, or in an environment with conditions similar to that of a real workplace.
To be assessed for this unit of competency, you must demonstrate your skills and knowledge to articulate, present and debate ideas in a work or broader life context using creative techniques in order to provoke response, reaction and critical discussion.
Task 1: Establish Communication Framework
This task will require you to establish a communication framework for a work task that involves presenting ideas to at least two types of audience.
Types of audience refer to groups or categories of people who are involved in the work task that you identified. These can include:
· stakeholders involved in the decision-making process associated to your work task
· employees involved in a proposed business project
· clients to whom you will present a creative or sales pitch
Use your workplace/organisation's template to complete this task, or use the Communication Framework template provided at the Bounce Fitness site.
To complete this task, you must:
· Access and review the following:
o Workplace documentation with information on at least one work task that involves presenting ideas to at least two types of audience
Workplace documentation that you can access include:
• action plans
• your job description
Work task that you identify here must be the same work task that you will complete for the rest of the practical assessments for this unit.
Work tasks can include:
• project proposal
• creative pitching
• facilitating focus group discussions
o Organisational policies, procedures, or guidelines applicable to the identified work task
· Research and identify at least one legislation or regulation applicable to identified work task.
o At least one organisational policy, procedure or guideline applicable to communication
o Explanation of how the identified organisational policy, procedure or guideline applies to identified work task
o At least one legislation or regulation applicable to communication
o Explanation of how the identified legislation or regulation applies to identified work task
Task 2: Develop Communication Plan
This task will require you to develop a communication plan for the presentation of your key ideas to at least two types of audiences.
The communication plan that you will develop for this task will be used for the presentation of your key ideas in Workplace Project Task 3.
Use your workplace/organisation's template to complete this task, or use the Communication Plan template provided at the Bounce Fitness site. To complete this task, you must:
· Review the communication framework submitted in Workplace Project Task 1 for the following information:
o Information on the work task that requires communication
o At least two types of audiences with whom you will communicate
· Consult with at least two colleagues about the types of audience you identified in
Workplace Project Task 1.
Colleagues that you will consult with for this task can include the audience whom you will present and discuss ideas with on Workplace Project Task 3.
During the consultation, you must:
o Identify at least two methods to elicit response from each type of audience. These must include:
• At least one method to provoke response
Provoking response is the act of triggering or stimulating your audience to ask questions about the ideas that you present.
• At least one method to encourage response
Encouraging response is the act of motivating your audience to contribute to the discussion of the ideas you present.
o Analyse each identified method of eliciting response by explaining the following:
• How each method identified works in provoking or encouraging response.
• How each type of audience would respond to each method identified for them.
· Identify at least two objectives of communication.
Objectives of communication refer to your desired reactions or activities from the audience in response to the ideas that you will present.
· Identify at least one key idea that will address each objective of communication that you identified.
Key ideas refer to the main ideas which will be the themes of the presentation and discussion that you will conduct.
The key ideas you will identify will be the same key ideas that you will present and discuss in Workplace Project Task 3.
· Research at least two references that provide substantial evidence for each key idea you will present.
Substantial evidence refers to reliable facts and data that support the key ideas that you present. References can include:
o Statistical surveys
o Internet research
o Public reports
· Develop a communication plan for the discussion of ideas to be conducted in Workplace Project Task 3.
This must include the following:
o Work task identified in Workplace Project Task 1
o At least two objectives of communication
o At least two persuasive communication techniques
The techniques that you will identify here will be the same techniques to be used in presenting your ideas in Workplace Project Task 3.
o Assessment of each persuasive communication technique against each objective of communication.
This must include:
• At least one feature of each technique that satisfies each objective of communication
• Explanation of how each identified feature satisfies their corresponding objectives
o At least two potential communication challenges
o At least one strategy to mitigate each communication challenge identified
o At least two key ideas for presentation
o At least two references researched for each key idea
Task 3: Present and Debate Ideas
Your assessor will observe you as you present and facilitate a discussion about the key ideas that you researched about in Workplace Project Task 2 to at least two types of audience.
Before starting this task, you must:
· Review the following:
o Communication Framework submitted in Workplace Project Task 1.
o Communication Plan submitted in Workplace Project Task 2.
· Develop a substantiated communication according to the key ideas and their references that you identified in Workplace Project Task 2.
Substantiated communication refers to a document or list of documents that provide factual information and evidence for the ideas that you will tackle during your presentation. This can include:
o Folder containing several articles/documents about each key idea
o Transcript of presentation
o Outline of presentation
· Review Workplace Project Task 3 - Observation Form
This form outlines all the practical skills you need to demonstrate to satisfactorily complete this task. Your assessor will also discuss with you the practical skills outlined in this form prior to the assessment.
· Submit a copy of the substantiated communication that you developed to each of your audience members and to your assessor as supplementary evidence for this task. This must be at least one of the following:
o Folder containing several articles/documents about the key ideas
o Transcript of presentation
o Outline of presentation
Task 4: Revise Communication
This task will require you to use the feedback received from Workplace Project Task 3 to revise the substantiated communication plan that you developed.
To complete this task, you must:
· Access the substantiated communication that you developed in Workplace Project Task 3.
· Revise the substantiated communication according to the feedback that you received in the previous task.
Revision must include:
o Updated sections of the document/s as recommended by the audience
o Select sentences and phrases moved and edited to improve the flow of content
o Information that was asked by the audience.
o Ideas agreed upon during the discussion.

· Resources you are required to access to complete the task.
· All criteria your submission must address to satisfactorily complete this task.
Your assessor will discuss these resources with you, and the criteria outlined in this form prior to this assessment.
Submit the revised substantiated communication to your assessor. This must be at least one of the following:
· Folder of references with additional documents/articles about relevant information
· Revised outline of presentation
· Revised transcript of presentation
