Question 1) What sentences catch your attention in "A Woman's Beauty: Put-down or Power Source?" by Susan Sontag? Write these sentences (1-2) as direct quotes. This will help you develop a clear sense of the text as well as focus on what aspects of the text you may want to write about (try to make a habit of it). Direct quotes, when used in your writing can take many forms but generally, they look like this: In "A Woman's Beauty: Put-Down or Power Source?" Susan Sontag claims, "exact words from the text here" (page number in parentheses here).
The last part in parentheses is called the end text citation. It goes at the end of the sentence before the period and provides the page number for any quote, summary, paraphrase you include in your writing. Remember, if you continue to write in your own words after the quote the end text citation should wait until the end of the sentence.
Question 2) Write your response to the text (100+ Words). You finished the essay and your thoughts, feelings, ideas are... Use complete sentences (aim for a full paragraph and try to develop your thoughts clearly/concretely. Again, 100+ Words). Make use of the sentences you chose above to develop/support your ideas and opinions about the text. Uncertain about what a response paragraph is? Read the explanation in the "General Writing Skills" section of Blackboard here. You can also use your own knowledge to compare/contrast with Sontag's ideas. You can include, as support for your ideas about current society, someone you know, someone you observe out in the world during your everyday activities, a celebrity, etc.
