Colonialism can be devastating for the weaker state being colonized. Often time the indigenous people of the area are exploited for labor, the land and resources are at times depleted, and there can be an overall lasting impression of discourse even many years after colonization has occurred. England's colonization of parts of Africa was largely due to its desire to acquire slave labor and expand its territories, but those who settled were also tasked with enforcing European law. Many of the indigenous people of the area were forced to forgo their beliefs. Often, in modern times, the labor in areas that were previously colonized is not adequately compensated and the goods in which they produce are sold at a cost that is inexpensive to thriving nations due to cheaper labor costs.
