Read the following extract from a business research report and answer the two questions that follow.

Innovation and service quality are central issues in business performance. This study hypothesizes that customer participation mediates the relationship innovation adoption and service quality and that service quality is positively related to firm performance. The study used the data drawn from a survey of Asian businesses. The participating firms employed at least 50 full-time employees. This study used a systematic selection process (every 15th company listed) to select 1000 businesses that met the criteria of having at least 50 full-time employees from a commercial mailing list. The research team contacted potential respondents (marketing managers at the selected companies) via telephone and asked them to fill out an online survey. The research team sent a reminder email to the respondents one week after the first one. In total, the research team received 155 usable surveys from marketing managers at the selected firms, producing a response rate of 15.5%.
