Second Cold War

This second to last week of a great history course, I have chosen about the Second Cold War. We have all heard of the Cold War, but Second Cold War, is an entirely different perspective. Those today believe we are in the Third Cold War, with multiple adversaries, not just one country. The Second Cold War lasted from early 1980s to 1985, during this time Ronald reagan was president of the United States. "Reagan viewed the Soviet Union as an incorrigible adversary"(Fink). Most the key policies started during the Second Cold War, did not last, but grew in favor during their initiation. In Poland, on December 31, 1981, martial law was handed down in Poland, to deter a rise in democratic ideals, backed the Soviet Union. "Star Wars", not the George Lucas films, but the Strategic Defense Initiative (SDI), was also developed during this time, by the United States. SDI overall purpose was to block nuclear missiles from entering US airspace launched from Soviet Union launch sites.

Escalation between the two superpowers only grew on September 1, 1983, when a Soviet aircraft shot down a South Korean airliner, killing 269 personnel including 69 Americans. As the two superpowers struggle against one another, they also struggle over China. The ruler of the People's Republic, Deng Xiaoping, launches a second revolution within the country. Our greatest ally, Britain was to affected by this Second Cold War, England and Argentina were involved in costly disputes over the Falkland Islands, from April to June 1982. The reelection of President Reagan in 1985, was overwhelming, during his second inaugural speech he focused on reaching an agreement with the Soviet Union on missile reduction. President Reagan stated, "human freedom is on the march and nowhere more so than our own hemisphere "(Reagan).
