Determining Staple Foods

Imagine you are moving into your first apartment. One of your first tasks is to stock your kitchen with staple foods.

Part A - Developing a List of Staple Foods

Consult three (3) reliable sources that describe the staple foods that every kitchen should have. Use these resources to make your own list (15-25 items). Remember to include these resources on your Reference List.

Part B - Comparison Shopping

Find the cost of each item on your list from two (2) different retail outlets (consult Canadian online grocery shopping sites or grocery store flyers to find realistic costs in Canadian dollars). Use a chart or other suitable graphic organizer to show your cost comparison. Make sure to record the cost of each food item and the store from which you could buy it. Total your list to determine how much it will cost to set up your kitchen.

Put a Reference List in the correct format to acknowledge your sources of information.

Part C - Reflection

Use the following guiding questions to reflect on your findings:

• Were you surprised by the total?
• What factors influenced your decisions about what to include on your list of staples?
• Where would you buy the items on your list? Explain your reasoning.

At the end put the completed chart, Reflection, and Reference List for evaluation.
