Problem

Social stratification is a way of ranking different categories of people in society. This results in the formation of social classes, groups of individuals with similar access to resources and opportunities. The three main social classes are the upper class, the middle class, and the lower class. The social class one is born into determines some of one's life opportunities, such as the type of work one will do, one's level of education, and even one's life expectancy. Many factors contribute to a person's social stratification and class. Wealth and income are significant contributors to social inequality and determine one's socioeconomic status. Wealth is the accumulation of assets and property, while income is money earned through work and investments. People in the upper class have better access to resources, while those in the lower class face limitations. Social stratification and class hierarchy impact people's lives, defining their opportunities and benefits.
