Question: John Stuart Mill observed that it seems to him as if men were being dishonest when they claimed that they believed submissive wife and mother to be the "natural vocation? of women. He thought that men were "determined that the law of marriage shall be a law of despotism (dictatorship)" and had constructed society so as to force women into domesticity rather than trying to make the role a desirable one by treating their wives as equals/ What do you think of this reasoning and of the examples he gives in the reading? Do you think that the mindset he describes is still prevalent today? why or why not?
