A hydraulic jump, sketched in Fig. 4.19, can occur in a channel with no apparent cause, such as when a fast flowing stream flows from the mountains to the plains. (It is analogous to a shock wave that exists in a gas flow.) The momentum equation allows the height downstream to be calculated if the upstream height and velocity are known.
