Question: An engineer is tasked to design a feasible conveyor system from several options available. A closed loop overhead conveyor is tasked with delivering parts from one load station to one unload station. The specified flow rate of parts that must be delivered between the two stations is 600 parts per hour. Forward and return loops will each be 90m long. The conveyor has carriers. Conveyor speed-0.5m/s. In systems 1 to 4, the carriers can hold one, two, three or four (n=1, 2, 3 or 4) parts, and the time, in seconds, to load and unload parts at the respective stations, T1-9+3np. Determine which of the four systems are feasible, and if so, the number of carriers and center-to-center spacing between carriers that will achieve the specified flow rate.
