Perform the following tasks:
Step 1: Review lesson information.
Review lesson information presented in the lesson about effective listening, the listening process, and types of listening. This information includes the following:
o Identify your listening goal
o Listen for major ideas
o Separate facts from inferences
o Determine whether the speech is balanced and honest
Step 2: Select one of the following informative speeches to view and critique.
View the speech about Vincent Van Gogh.
View the speech about getting to know the elderly.
Step 3: Watch the speech and listen carefully to the message.
Assume that the speech is live and that you have one opportunity to grasp the information as described in Step 1. Note information that you feel would be sufficient for providing an informative summary of the speech.
Step 4: Write a summary.
Briefly summarize the speech according to criteria listed in Step 1.
Step 5: Watch the speech a second time and listen carefully to the message.
Listen to the speech again but do not adjust or change your summary from your first exposure to the content.
Step 6: Evaluate your listening skills.
In a one- to two page (250- to 500-word) paper, critique your listening skills according to the following criteria:
o How accurate was your summary? What points did you gather during the second viewing of the speech that you did not gather during the first viewing?
o Critique your listening skills. Identify your listening strengths and weaknesses. Were there times during the speech you lost concentration or were distracted? How might you improve your listening skills?
