Problem 1: Depending on whether we work as an employee for a company or we are instead self-employed, the tax consequences can be very different. Self-employed individuals may be entitled to a greater range of deductions, but they also might very well be responsible for paying additional taxes. Furthermore, many employees receive valuable benefits from their employers, and these perks may drive tax consequences as well. To begin this discussion topic, for purposes of the tax code, how do we determine whether someone is an employee or whether he or she is self-employed?
