Steam enters a two-stage adiabatic turbine at 8 MPa and 550ºC (State 1) and is expanded to 2 MPa (State 2) in the first stage of expansion. This steam is reheated at constant pressure to 550ºC (State 3) before entering the second stage of expansion. Steam leaves the second turbine stage at 150 kPa (State 4). The power output of the two-stage turbine is 80 MW and isentropic efficiency of each turbine stage is 84%.

a) Calculate the mass flow rate (kg/s) through the two-stage turbine.

b) Determine the temperature (ºC) at the exit of each turbine.

c) Calculate the rate of entropy generation (kW/K) for the two-stage turbine.

What is the fracture toughness : A tensile sample of width 10mm contains an internal crack of length 0.3mm. When loaded in tension the crack suddenly propagates when the stress reaches 450 MPa. What is the fracture toughness K1c of the material of the sample? If the material has a m..
Determine the work and heat transfer per unit mass : Water, initially a saturated vapor at 150 degrees Celsius, is contained in a piston-cylinder assembly. The water undergoes a polytrophic process (n=1) to a pressure of 0.01 MPa, during which the piston moves freely in the cylinder.
Phase diagram for a new binary alloy : A “friend” asks you to construct the phase diagram for a new binary alloy of A and B. The clues are: (i) A and B are completely immiscible in each other and no solid solutions exist in the diagram, (ii) no stoichiometric compounds exist in the diagra..
Developed a device that converts heat transferred : An inventor claims to have developed a device that converts heat transferred to it at 1500 degrees Fahrenheit into work with a thermal efficiency of 70%. Heat is rejected to the 70 degree Fahrenheit surroundings. Is this possible? Why or Why not?
