Diverse Populations and age
One of the biggest topics that are important to share with young adults is safe sexual practice. Safe sex is sexual activity in which a person takes definite precautions to reduce the risk of sexually transmitted diseases, such as HIV and gonorrhea (Mazzei, 2015).
The scare of a sexually transmitted disease is real and needs to be clearly stated to the young adult. Also important to share is pregnancy and how that can effect a young adult who is not prepared or wanting to be a young parent.
Adolescents often believe themselves to be invincible, are highly susceptible to the influence of their peers, and have real or perceived obstacles to health care (Caple & Schub, 2015). This type of barrier needs to be overcome and can be with direct communication and education.
A young adult who is sexually active needs to be assessed and educated with routine STD screening every 6 months (Caple & Schub, 2015).
An older adult would have similar discussions and teachings of that of a young adult. One notable difference between the young adult and the older adult is that older adults have comorbid illnesses that mask STD signs and symptoms.
In addition, some symptoms of STDs may mimic symptoms of normal aging (Schub & March, 2015). It would be important to evaluate and assess what the comorbidities are of the older adult to clearly reveal what STD, if any, he/she may have.
Older adult females are not worried about pregnancy and have no threat of becoming pregnant. However untrue, the older adult female needs to be instructed and advised on pregnancy. A key note to the older adult population that healthcare works need to advise is that the older adult patient needs to have written information on STDs, the potential for HIV infection, and safe sex practices (Schub & March, 2015).
